Story behind famous Anime "Grave of the fireflies"
This heartbreaking picture was taken after the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Japan in 1945. It shows a young Japanese boy standing at attention, carrying the body of his baby brother who had been killed in the bombing. Makeshift crematoriums had been set up outside the city and this young boy had walked a long distance so that his brother could be cremated. This diary entry from the photographer, Joe O'Donnell, explained the photo. "I saw a boy about ten years old walking by. He was carrying a baby on his back. In those days in Japan, we often saw children playing with their little brothers or sisters on their backs, but this boy was clearly different. I could see that he had come to this place for a serious reason. He was wearing no shoes. His face was hard. The little head was tipped back as if the baby were fast asleep.
