Interesting facts about the Harry Potter series



  • We have been pronouncing “Voldemort” wrong. It's a French word for 'flight of death'. The ‘t’ at the end of Vol-de-mort goes silent. Anyway it doesn't matter because 'He is who must not be named' anyway.
  • The so called prison “Azkaban” wasn't really a prison, rather it was a fortress. It was used by a wizard named Ekrizdis who practiced black magic. He would lure muggles into the fortress in order to torture and eventually kill them.
  • James Sirius Potter started Hogwarts in 2015. He turned 11 that year and started his Hogwarts education on 1st of September, 2015. He was confined to Gryffindor.
  • Doleres Umbridge's character is inspired by a real person. Rowling said she had an absolute dislike for that individual but never revealed who it was. She added Umbridge was even more evil than Voldemort.
  • Harry's lightening bolt scar was cool. Rowling wanted the protagonist to have a cool scar and not stucked with a doughnut shaped scar. She thought about the scar on Harry's head a lot.
  • Many don't know how to pronounce Hermione's name. So Rowling decided to add Hermione teaching Viktor Krum how to pronounce her name in the 4th book. It's pronounced as Her-my-oh-nee.
  • In the Order of Phoenix when Hermione designs coin for all the members of DA so that they could send messages about the DA meetings. All the members kept the coins as 'Badges of honor’ after the war.
  • Hargrid's motorcycle actually belonged to Sirius Black. Later on Arthur Weasley fixed the motorcycle and it came to Harry.
  • Hufflepuff won the house cup on 9th September, 2015. If you think Hufflepuff is a ‘meh' house remember the mighty Cedric Diggory, and also Newt Scamander from Fantastic Beasts.
  • Harry and Tom Riddle are related. Both of them are descendants of Peverell family. Voldemort was supposedly descended from Cadmus Peverell, who was the 2nd brother and owner of the ressurection Stone and Harry descended from Ignotus Peverell, the owner of the Invisibility cloak.
  • The ‘sorting hat' goes through hatstalls. When the hat can't decide which house to out a witch or wizard in, it takes longer than usual. This is known as hatstalls. It happened in case of Peter Pettigrew and McGonagall.
  • Hagrid doesn't have Patronus. The patronous charm is really the difficult one to produce. As Hagrid didn't attend Hogwarts in the 3rd year and hence, he wasn't able to produce a Patronus.
  • Fred and George threw snowballs on Voldemort's face. The Weasley twins threw snowball into the turban of Professor Quirell, inside which Voldemort was laying.
  • Professor McGonagall was married to her previous boss Eliphstone Urquart from the Ministry of Magic. Unfortunately he died later and McGonagall never married again.
  • Rowling regretted keeping Ron and Hermione together. She quoted, “I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment. That's how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron. I know, I'm sorry, I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I'm absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people's hearts by saying this? I hope not."
