Sudan, Last hope of his species, dies
Meet Sudan.
He lived at the Ol Pejeta Sanctuary in Lakipia, Kenya.
He was the last male white rhino in the world.
The last male Northern White rhinoceros died yesterday.
At 45 years old, Sudan lived a long life for a Rhino. As the last male of his kind, Sudan was a beautiful ambassador for his species.
His presence brought attention and a sense of urgency to people around the globe. He stood as a living reminder of what we have destroyed. Now that he is gone it will be easier to forget, and when the last two females in existence also pass the Northern White Rhino will be completely lost.
Both Northern White rhinos still in existence are either too old or are in too poor of health to become pregnant. Hope for the species still remains in the form of artificial insemination or potential suragacy using a southern white rhinoceros.
By 1975, all the white rhinos had become extinct in the wild and were only present in wildlife captivity. But now even that is lost!
Rhinos are frequently hunted for their horns, skin and hide.. Even in India, they are in an endangered state. If we continue to buy products made out of animal skin, then the day is not far when this beautiful animal will no longer walk the earth.
Yes, We did this.
