Toughest Prisons ( Real / Fictional )
- Eyrie prison (Game of thrones)
You can see your freedom, but it’s soo far away.
Famous prisoner: Tyrion Lannister.
- Azkaban (Harry Potter)
A prison in the middle of the ocean guarded by Dementors. It’s not nice.
Famous Prisoner: Sirius Black
- Alkatraz (San Francisco)
It was considered the world’s most fearsome prison of the time. Inmates would go insane in the prison and one even chopped off their finger.
This is the gold standard of comparison for any tough prisons. There are “Alcatraz of the south”, “Alcatraz of Russia”
Famous prisoner: Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud (the "Birdman of Alcatraz")
- Vologodskiy Pyatak (Well you guessed it, in Russia)
It is a brutal prison located in a beautiful part of Russia.
A small idea of how brutal things are: “For the first 10 years of a man's sentence he is allowed two visits a year, of two hours each.” And “Misbehaving prisoners are sent to punishment cells to be locked in a small, dark room with only a metal bucket and a fold-down bed for 15 days. No books are allowed. In the daytime the bed is stowed and they must stand, or sit on a tiny wooden perch a few inches wide.”
- Pontefract Castle Dungeons
A prison which was built on a graveyard. It was once the most feared dungeon in England.
Famous prisoner: King Richard II whose imprisonment and death inspired Shakespeare to write two of his history plays Richard II and Richard III.
- Gitambara prison, Rwanda (Viewer discretion required) Rwanda - Severely Overcrowded Prisons . Designed to hold 400, it now holds 7000 and prisoners have to stand on the feet for most time and they stand on feces often.
- Honorable mention: Pelican Bay State prison
The only supermax prison in California where 40% of all prisoners are serving life sentences.
- Bonus track: The Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center, where people dance away their sentences: "Thriller" (original upload)
-SaGa
