How disgusting is that?
In the 2000 Paralympic Games, Spain’s basketball team won gold.
But it was later discovered that the majority of the players on the team weren’t disabled. They had faked their disabilities for the sake of earning fame and fortune.
Look at them smiling after winning.
How disgusting is that?
The only reason that they were caught was because one of the cheats was actually an undercover journalist looking for a scoop, and upon winning the medal, he returned it to Paralympic headquarters along with a report on the scandal.
According to him, the Spanish Federation of Sportspeople with Intellectual Disabilities (FEDDI) purposely chose to send people without disabilities in order to “win more medals and gain more sponsorship,” and it turns out that 10 out of 12 players on the basketball team weren’t disabled in any way.
Apparently, many of the cheaters saw it as a way of “getting a free trip to Sydney” as well as an opportunity to “show pride in representing Spain.”
And during their first match, the team’s coach actually told them to slow down and let their opponents shoot more when they had a 30-point lead. They would then continue to absolutely crush their opponents to win gold.
When Fernando Martín Vicente, vice-president of Spain’s Paralympic Committee and member of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), was accused of his wrong doings, he denied all allegations while further saying, "It is very sad. There was no bad intent."
This man actually believed that nothing wrong had been done.
But what was his punishment for lying to the whole world and further insulting and crushing the dreams of the disabled?
13 years after the incident, he was fined a measly €5,400 ($7,320) while also being ordered to return the €142,355 ($175,773) that was given to the organization in subsidies for signing on the “disabled.”
Charges for everyone else involved in the scandal were dropped.
What an absolute joke.
These crooks basically got off scot-free despite their blatant deceit and corruption. And they’re all still probably laughing about it today.
People who fake illness and disability for the sake of personal gain are absolutelydisgusting.
