The concept of Dutch Reach

The concept of Dutch Reach:
Before seeing about this, let’s know about something called ‘Dooring’.
What is Dooring?
Dooring is a traffic collision in which a cyclist is struck by a car door that was opened quickly without checking the side mirror for cyclists. The width of the door zone in which this can happen varies, depending upon the model of car one is passing.
Hope this image sums up the definition!
What is Dutch Reach?
The Dutch Reach is a method of opening a car door with the hand furthest from the handle.
Obviously, the furthest hand depends on left hand/right hand drive.
When you use your far hand, it actually pivots your body which momentarily forces your body to turn and face backward.
Thus avoiding collisions/fatalities!
Hope the above images sum up the above definition!
Why is it called Dutch Reach?
  1. Its been Dutch commonsense for almost 50 years.
  2. Dutch students learn it from their parent and also in school.
  3. It’s taught in Driver’s education and used to pass in driver’s test.
I read this today and thought this is definitely worth sharing!
Thanks for Scrolling!
Cheers :-)
